YearbookYou may expect to hear about dental based studies on various foods or extracts that can stop gum disease or tooth decay. Research on general health is an expected element of modern science. Studies on smiling might sound more frivolous. After all, a smile is just an involuntary reaction to happiness, isn’t it? Well, there might be more to the effects of smiling than we think, which is why there has been various science-based studies on the way we contort the muscles in our face, and how that might predict anything from career success to relationship success. Your Deerfield, MA dentists will tell you more.

Smiling Research in the UK

A British study recently focused on the therapeutic properties of smiling. One single smile was compared to the same endorphin release that has been pin-pointed from the consumption of chocolate. If you’re a chocolate lover, you know the comforting feeling of indulging in one of your favorite treats. Imagine treating yourself the same way every time you flash a grin. Pay attention throughout the day when you smile and laugh, and notice how good it makes you feel. These same researchers noted that smiling also simulated the amazing feeling that might overcome you if you won money in the lottery. Smiling also reduces stress hormones, and lowers blood pressure. Sounds like plenty to smile about.

California Study Predicts Career Success through Smiles

Several other university based studies looked at smiles as predictors of people’s futures. People’s smiles in their college yearbook photos were the focus of research at UC Berkeley, in Berkeley, CA. The financial and career success, as well as general well-being of students was tracked after the initial notations were made on the yearbook photographs. No matter how many years had passed, the more wide and natural a smile, the more career success the prior graduates reported. Additionally, a higher quality of interpersonal relationships was predictable based on people’s smiles.
