Sometimes we all need to relax outside and enjoy some fresh air. A little time in the sun can make you feel rejuvenated, but did you know the sun also helps protect your teeth? Your Greenfield family dentists, Drs. Bagley, Goodwin, and Hrinda, explain the benefits of vitamin D and how the sun’s rays can help prevent tooth decay.

Go Outside

When you spend time outside, your body absorbs vitamin D from the sun’s UV rays. Vitamin D stimulates calcium production, which strengthens bones and tooth enamel. Another benefit of vitamin D is an increase in the amount of beneficial antimicrobial peptides, which fight harmful bacteria. This bacterium feeds on food particles, and as a result, increases oral acidity and weakens tooth enamel. With weak enamel, your teeth become vulnerable to tooth decay.

For children, research shows vitamin D really helps in cavity prevention. A recent study conducted by the University of Washington revealed that children exposed to vitamin D experienced a 50% reduction in tooth decay. According to Dr. Michael Hollick, professor of medicine at the Boston University Medical Center:  “…the findings from the University of Washington reaffirm the importance of vitamin D for dental health. Children who are vitamin D deficient have poor and delayed teeth eruption and are prone to dental caries.”

The sun is a free and readily available form of vitamin D. Try jogging or hiking, take the dog for a walk, or play with your children in the park. Become involved in an outdoor sports activity after school or work. Not only will outdoor activities help you avoid cavities, but the exercise is good for your overall health.

Other Sources of Vitamin D

Now, with winter still upon us, getting some sun may prove rather difficult. Thankfully, there are a variety of alternative sources for receiving the recommended doses of vitamin D. Eat more foods containing fish or egg yolks. Add cod liver oil and fortified dairy products to your diet. Your local pharmacy should offer vitamin D supplements, as well.
